Flaxseed oil comes from the seeds of the flax plant, and is the richest source of plant based omega-3 called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is one of two fatty acids that the body needs and cannot make for itself. It also contains omega 6 as a linoleic acid but in lower concentration than ALA. Our conventional diet is low in Omega-3 and high in omega-6 due to which many people now has omega 3 deficiency. Omega 3 fatty acid is essential in various bodily processes, including fingthing inflammation, heart health, and brain function. Being deficient in omega-3 is associated with lower intelligence, depression, heart disease, arthritis, and many other health problems.
ALA being a polyunsaturated fatty acid can easily degrade in sunlight or if kept in plastic bottle. So care should be taken to store any raw polyunsaturated oil in amber glass away from sunlight and never to cook with it.
